Influenza (commonly known as the flu) is a viral infection that is highly contagious and lasts approximately 5 – 7 days. Because it is a virus, it is not treatable with antibiotics. Recommended treatment usually consists of rest, fluids, and fever control with Acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (such as Motrin or Advil). Never use any products with aspirin.

Symptoms that you may see with flu include headache, fevers, chills, body aches, cough/congestion, sore throat, and occasionally belly pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.

In most cases, your child will not need to be seen in our office for the flu. However, please observe them closely for signs of complications that would require an office visit. These signs may include:

  • Worsening cough
  • Shortness of breath with activity
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Changes of color around the lips
  • Signs of dehydration (decreased urine output, dry lips, or extreme lethargy)
  • Other changes in symptoms over the course of the flu

Good handwashing and flu vaccines are important for the prevention of flu.
